Making order out of chaos

Lesson Learned

Starting a weblog that is supposed to be about writing, with an admission of ineptitude is probably not the way to impress potential employers. However, I’m a ‘glass is half-full’ sort of person, so here are two good things about that first entry:

  1. I was honest and admitted I had no idea what I was doing with WordPress.
  2. I learned how to use WordPress correctly and I can hope that I won’t repeat my mistake.

Truthfully, I will probably make the same mistake again. However, I will have backed up my work so I don’t lose all my progress when I accidentally delete my post.

Anyway.

I want to start getting down to business on this weblog in fairly short order, but first I feel I need to say a few things about what you can expect from my writing here.

I will write about technical communication and writing in general since I spend most of my days typing away at something. I’ll also write about whatever else happens to be on my mind.

Everyone I’ve talked to who writes for a living tells me the only way to be good at writing is to just do it. My instructor at the Vancouver Community College has encouraged us to write “morning papers”. This exercise involves sitting down after you wake up and just writing whatever is in your head without stopping, editing or thinking too much. This exercise is to get you to approach the blank page without fear, to be able to sit and just begin writing.

So, that said, I will write on many topics here; books, movies, writing, eating, people, music and whatever else takes my fancy for the day.

I’d welcome any and all constructive criticism of anything I write here.  I just have to clarify one thing: when I say ‘constructive’ I don’t mean saying “You’re the worst writer ever.”  I want you to tell me why I’m the worst writer ever.  I’ll never learn otherwise.

Good luck with your blog and writing. I started my site a few weeks a go with similar outcomes in mind and haven’t looked back.
